In an interview with The Line Of Best Fit, Hayley revealed
Throughout the songs on this album, there is a feeling of internal conflict, a paradox of being both hero and villain, possibly best represented by lines in "You First": "Turns out I'm living in a horror film / Where I'm both the killer and the ultimate girl". Williams confesses to having experienced it in extremes. "You're someone's hero, and they come up to you and tell you about all the things you've helped them with, but in the back of your mind, you're thinking, 'But I'm an asshole,' about something you did or a mistake you made. Isn't it true that this person has no idea? But I believe it is simply the contradictory character of being.
